What is the mount of sunlight?

A farmer wants to see if the type of hay that he feeds his cows makes a difference in their growth. He thinks that feeding them a special type will help them grow more over 1 year. He feeds cow A the regular hay, cow B the same amount of alfalfa hay and cow C the same amount of legume hay. He weighs the cows before the experiment and then weighs them again in 1 year.

Name the Problem.

Name the Hypothesis.

Does the type of hay fed to cows effect their growth?

Special types of hay would help the cows grow more over a period of a year.

Scientists and nutritionists have long suspected high fructose corn syrup, used to sweeten soft drinks, is one of the causes of childhood obesity. In a recent study, at the university of Cincinnati, researchers found that mice that drank water with added fructose ate less solid food, gained more weight and put on 90% more body fat than mice that drank only water. Scientist concluded that fructose may affect metabolism in a way that favors storage.

Name the independent variable.

Name the dependent variable.

The presence of fructose in their diet.

The weight gained by the mice.

Megan wanted to see if she could get a balloon to inflate by mixing chemicals together. She knew from previous experience that mixing vinegar (an acid) and baking soda (a base) together would fizz and put off gases. When she looked around the lab and gathered all her supplies she didn't find vinegar but did get another acid called Hydrochloric Acid (HCl). She thought that HCl would work the same as vinegar since it was an acid so she designed her experiment. She then put on her safety gloves and went to work. Megan measured out 10mL of baking soda and put it in the balloon. She then measured out 10mL of HCl and put it in a flask. She stretched the opening of the balloon over the flask and lifted the balloon so the baking soda would mix with the acid. She was excited to see that the when the baking soda and HCl mixed they began to fizz and the balloon inflated.

Name Megan's Conclusion.

You can mix HCl and baking soda and get a balloon to inflate

Suzy wants to know if giving plants another liquid other than water will make them grow taller. She thinks that water will work best because that's what plants get in nature. She puts seeds in same sized pots with the same amount of soil, puts the seed exactly 1 inch under the soil and puts them next to the window all side by side. She waters plant A with 10mL of water every other day, plant B with 10mL of milk every other day and plant C with 10mL of orange juice every other day for 21 days. She then measures their growth each week.

Data Collected Water Milk Orange Juice Week 1 8mm 6mm 4mm Week 2 14mm 8mm 2mm Week 3 18mm 10mm Plant died

Name the Problem.

Name the Hypothesis.

What type of liquid helps plants grow the best?

The seed that receives the water will grow taller.
