100

Name all provinces and territories of Canada.

BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, QC, NS, NB, NL, PEI, YT, NT, NU

100

What are the names of the physiographic regions we studied in class?

(Western) Cordillera, Interior Plains, Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Lowlands, Arctic/North, Appalachian/Atlantic, Canadian Shield

100

What is the difference between weather and climate?

Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at any time and place.

Climate is the average of weather conditions for a certain place taken over many years.

100

Who is the current Prime Minister?

Mark Carney

200

What 3 oceans border Canada?

Arctic, Atlantic, Pacific

200

Which region is known as the "breadbasket" of Canada?

Interior Plains

200

Explain how latitude affects climate.

Places closer to the North and South Poles experience colder temperatures than those near the equator due to the curvature of Earth. This is due to the energy being spread over a larger area.

200

What is the tallest mountain in Canada?

Mount Logan

300

Which city is the most populated?

Toronto, ON

300

Which region is home to a large portion of Canada's population, productive farmland, and rich soil?

Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Lowlands

Explain how landforms and elevation affect climate (Hint: rain shadow region).

Landforms, such as mountains, affect the amount of precipitation regions receive. For example, Canada's west coast receives more precipitation compared to the prairies because mountain ranges act as barriers to the movement of air masses.

Elevation also impacts temperatures. As air rises it expands (less air pressure), and as it expands it cools. Therefore, the higher the elevation, the cooler the temperature.

300

Name the 5 major political parties in Canada.

(Progressive) Conservative, NDP, Liberal, Bloc Quebecoise, Green Party

400

What were the first 4 provinces of Canada upon Confederation?

QC, ON, NB, NS

400

In which region is the Fraser River located?

Cordillera

400

Explain the differences between continental and maritime (marine) climates. Give specific examples to explain your ideas.

Continental - Climate type that develops away from large water bodies. Regions with this climate experience large temperature ranges and low precipitation levels. Ex. Wpg, Mb

Maritime - Climate type that is influenced by closeness to a large water body. Regions with this climate experience small temperature ranges and high precipitation levels. Ex. Halifax, NS

400

Who is the current Governor General?

Mary Simon

500

Over how many km does Canada stretch, both East to West and North to South?

It stretches over 5,500 km from East to West, and 4,600 km North to South.

500

Which region is the largest?

How old is it? Be as specific as possible.

Canadian Shield

3.96 billion years old

500

Explain the ways in which air masses impact climate.

An air mass originating over water contains moisture, which leads to high levels of precipitation.

Air masses that originate over land lack this moisture, and as a result, little to no precipitation is present.

500

What is the current population of Manitoba?

Approx. 1.5 million
