Who are the Populists?
Small farmers of all races, mostly tenant farmers in the rural south and west.
Who are the Progressives?
upper-middle class, well educated protestants from the urban northeast and midwest.
What social issues were progressives concerned about? How did they try to solve them?
Child labor, unsafe working conditions, low wages, prison reform.
Photography of and, investigative journalism on the conditions brings exposure to the public.

What happened in the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory Fire?
In order to stop their young female workers from taking breaks, the factory owners chained the doors closed. When a fire started they couldn't get out. 146 young women are trapped in the burning building. They either jumped to their deaths or were burned alive. Starts govt safety regulations.
What were the long term causes of WWI?
the collapse of declining empires, rise of ethnic, nationalistic groups, interlocking alliances.
What caused the populist party to form?
Concern about poor weather(droughts), high protective tarrifs, high interest rates and RR fees, not enough gold in circulation. overproduction-mechanization and new lands means 2 1/2 times crops = cash crops
What did progressives want to accomplish?
They wanted to expose and end the massive political corruption, and expose the terrible work and living conditions of the poor.

Chicago workers strike for 8 days, an anarchists bomb kills 7 cops and cops kill 4 workers. Four workers are hung with no evidence of crimes

What solutions did Populists have for the issues of the time?
1)They organized, creating the Grange and Southern alliance Populist party. 2) They chose to run their own businesses and coops, rather than rely on the 1% 3) The Ocala Demands

company cuts wages to drive the union out. Private army joined by state militia attack strike, 13 killed

What were the Ocala Demands?
They demanded that the government regulate the railroads, they wanted government loans at low interest rates, They proposed and income tax to replace steep tarriffs. They wanted direct election of Senators. To ban absentee land ownership, and to institute the Silver standard (to back uip US currency with silver and gold)
How did progressives go about making changes?
1) by exposing the problems they saw. The invention of investigative journalism.
2)by working to pass local, state and federal laws to protect the poor
3)By training and hiring "experts" to solve the problems
Who was Ida Tarbell?
She went asainst Standard Oil. She wrote a book about all of the illegal ways J.D. Rockafeller monopolised the oil industry.
What happened with the Pullman strike?
Pullman workers go on strike, railrod workers accross the country join in solidarity. US Army troopps are sent in to end the strike.

The early 1900's. They took over the Democratic party and forced both parties to adopt their policies.

What happened in the Ludlow Massacre?
Coal miners on strike had built a tent city on a farmers land. Private militia come in and machine gun the camp and then set it on fire. 21 die (11children)
How long did the US wait to join WWI?
2 years. We claimed neutral nation rights allowing us to trade nonmilitary items.
