Pyramids in ancient Egypt were built as elaborate tombs for pharaohs and their consorts, serving religious purposes to ensure their journey to and survival in the afterlife. Egyptians believed the mummified body was essential for the pharaoh's spirit, or ka, to endure in the afterlife and needed to be protected in a grand, eternal dwelling. The pyramidal shape itself was symbolic, possibly representing the rays of the sun or a divine staircase for the ruler's soul to ascend to the heavens and join the gods.  The pharoah was buried with his organs in canopic jars, food, beverages, jewelry, etc. ANything he could need in the afterlife!
