Becuase of wide open flat lands, warm climate and fertile soil these colonies had a plantation economy where they relied on enslaved people for labor: cash crops were labor intensive, and their goal was to make as much money as possible – tobacco,rice, indigo etc.

Religion was apart of everyday life because Religious leaders were leaders of the town, members were expected to follow strict rules and were punished if they did not, voting members had to be active in the church, and the Puritans were intolerant of other religions

Mayflower compact; MA Bay colony =form of self-government; promised each other that they would obey whatever laws the community established; limited democracy: only colonists who could vote were white men who owned property. The men also had to be members in good standing of the town church.

Had self-government in colonies in these colonies but was not a complete democracy, though b/c The white male landowners of the colony elected the legislative, or lawmaking, bodies. Also, the Proprietor of each colony ( NJ, PA, NY,DE) chose the governor of the colony
