Explain the XYZ affair.
What is the French were mad at the U.S. for signing a treaty with the British so they started seizing American merchant ships. The U.S. tried to negotiate a peace with France and sent peacemakers but the French officials (known as X, Y, and Z) demanded $250,000 in bribes before they would even speak to the U.S. officals. The U.S. then broke off negotiations, expanded their army and navy, and won some victories over French warships.
