100

Renewable energy is...

Energy that comes from a source that won't run out/natural and self-replenishing.

100
Indigenous people are dealing with...

not enough clean water.

100

TRUE OR FALSE: Wheat is intensive farming

False
100

TRUE OR FALSE: the Ontario Ring Of Fire is located in Southern Ontario

False (located in Northern Ontario).
200

Canada has fossil fuel deposits for...

liquid oil, liquid sand, and natural gas

200

Clean energy comes from...

generation systems that do not produce any kind of pollution.

200

The water advisories are...

Boil Water Advisory, Do Not Consume Advisory, and Do Not Use Advisory.

200

The most ideal farmland classes are:

Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3.

200

Why is the Ontario Ring Of Fire a good spot for mining?

Lots of valuable minerals that are in high demand that are also yield high profits.
300

Oil is formed...

from ancient plants and animals 500 million years, ago. Plankton eventually settles on the ocean floor and gets compressed due to pressure as they decay, creating oil.

300

The main renewable energy sources are...

Solar, hydro, wind, tidal, geothermal, and biomass

300

Do Not Use Advisory means...

the water poses a health risk and the water system has pollutants that cannot be removed from the water by boiling. Exposure to the water can cause skin, eye, and/or nose irritations.

300

Geography influences where we can farm because...

Some places are too cold for plants to grow, and most of Canada, for example, is only warm enough to grow very few plants that grow fast and can survive in colder climates. The warmer the climate, the larger the range of plants and the faster the plants can grow. Moisture is also important and can influence where we can farm.

300

The Ontario Ring Of Fire is...

a site with very large mineral deposits (5000 square kilometeres). Estimated that there's enough nickel and chromite present to support mining operations for a hundred years and lots of jobs.
400

Fracking is done by...

A technique called “fracking” is used to extract the natural oil. You first drill down into the Earth, the kickoff point at around 2500-3000 meters deep, which is where it can start horizontal drilling, doing a 90 degree angle and drilling for around 1.5 kilometers through a compressed layer of black rock called the shale rock formation. Then, a special gun is fired to the rock, punching 1-inch holes into the rock. After 3-4 months, fracking fluid is thrown down into the hole at a very high pressure that cracks the shale rock, making fractures and letting natural gas and oil drip through.

400

Geothermal energy works by...

utilizing heat from underground to heat up buildings and create steam to turn wind turbines.

400

Federal responsibilities around indigenous water...

because of "The Indian Act" (written in 1876), it is the federal government who has responsibility for the First Nation's water reserves. This includes building and upkeep of treatment plants and pipes (which deliver the water to homes and buildings).

400

The province with the largest area of land for farming is...

Saskatchewan

400

Why should we not want the mining to continue in The Ring Of Fire?

It will create a large crater in the ground, making that land useless for other purposes (housing, farming, etc). It will also cause pollution and danger to the wildlife.

500

A liquid oil deposit is formed when...

If this happens with living organisms under a rock, a liquid oil deposit is formed.

500

Nuclear energy works when...

the center of an atom changes, either splitting or coming together to create energy.

500

Despite all of these obligations as of NOV. 15, 2024, there are still ? communities in Canada still under long term boil water advisories.

500

Intensive farming...

requires small amount of land, lots of workers/maintenance/labor, usually located in large cities/urban places, creates these resources for the local population.

BONUS: examples could be Dairy, Eggs, Hog Production, etc

In the government's view, the positive and negative impacts of mining the Ring of Fire is...

Positive: Less reliance on China for minerals, slightly more eco-friendly economic boost, minimize delays, lower costs, and set service, standards for government review times, and helps protect Canada from Trump's attacks.

Negative: Pushback from citizens (especially from Indigenous communities) and can harm the environment.
