Adrian says that there are 4 tens in the number 340 but Chelsea says that there are 34.  Ms. Gallo says that they are both correct. How can that be so? Explain.

Adrian understood the number 340 to have 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 0 ones.

Chelsea understood the number to have 0 hundreds and 34 tens

3 hundreds+4 tens + 0 ones =340

0 hundreds + 34 tens + 0 ones= 340

Yariel said that he can figure out the problem, 56 divided by 8 by skip counting by 8's.  Is he correct? Explain your answer.

Yes, Yariel is correct.  He knows that 56 divided by 8 is the same thing as the equation 8x___=56.  If Yariel skip counts by 8's until he gets to 56, the answer (7) will be the same for both equations.

Kaylin has 350 pencils.  Cesia yelled out, "Kaylin has 5 times as many pencils as I do!" Which equation could represent how many pencils Cesia has? (C stands for the number of pencils Cesia has) Explain your answer

a. 350 x 5= C

b. 5 x 350= C

c. 5 x C= 350

d. 350 x C= 5

c. 5 x C= 350

I know this because Kaylin has 350 pencils total. Those 350 pencils are 5 times more than the pencils that Cesia has. 5 times C (Cesia's pencils) equals 350 (the number of Kaylins pencils.

Which statement is true? Explain

a. 40 x 7= 7 x (4+10)

b. 13 x 17= (3x 17) + (13 x 17)

c. 15 x 16= (5x16) + (10x16)

d. 10x 25= 25 + 10

c. 15 x 16= (5x16)+(10x16)

I know this because if you decompose 15 into friendly numbers, you end up with a 5 and a 10 (because 5+10=15).  If I multiple both of those numbers by 16 and then add up the products, I will get the same as if I multiply 15 x 16.
