Life-forms on Earth depend on each other for food. This is called a food chain. A food chain usually begins with a life-form that makes its own food, such as a plant. Next, another life-form, such as a caterpillar, eats the plant. Then, the caterpillar is eaten by a bird. Finally, when the bird dies, its body is broken down by bacteria and other organisms. This is the last link in the chain.

Chemical pesticides are often sprayed on food plants to kill insects and prevent crop damage. However, pesticides can be harmful to people, animals, and the environment.
