Any US citizen or intended US citizen could file an application with the government
If accepted, the person would receive 160 acres of government land
They had to live on the land for five years, build a home, and grow crops
After five years, they could file for the deed to the land by submitting proof of living there and making improvements to the land

Nativism
From 1830 to 1890, federal and state governments followed a policy of pushing Native American tribes from the traditional lands onto these in the West
These were often smaller lands than the tribe's previous lands and consisted of undesirable land.
Native Americans were traditionally hunters, not farmers.

Reservation System

Cities were often run by corrupt "Political Machines"
This individual was the leader of New York City's corrupt Tammany Hall poltical organization during the 1860's and early 1870's.
He openly bought votes, encouraged judicial corruption, extracted millions from city contracts, and dominated New York City politics
From 1860 to 1890 herds of these were destroyed.
