Melting pot is a metaphor for the many different cultures, nationalities and ethnicities living in the city side by side. Hip-hop is a music style that was invented in the Bronx (New York) during the 1970s. At that time, it was the poorest borough in New York and had to deal with problems like homelessness, old and damaged buildings, and very few possibilities for people to escape this situation. Despite these challenges, young people from the African-American community used their creativity to create something new and exciting.

Explain the meaning behind the lyrics:

"New York - Concrete jungle where dreams are made of (...) big lights will inspire you."

"Concrete jungle" - metaphor for the huge concrete buildings between which you might feel very small

"Where dreams are made of" - New York is a city of opportunities, where you can chase the American dream and become everything you want - as long as you are determined enough.

"Big lights will inspire you" - The big lights refer to the lights of New York never going out, as well as the bright lights of the billboards and advertisements that can be seen in many places (e.g. Times Square)

Explain the system of the US elections with 3 facts!

There are (mostly) two parties: The Republicans and the Democrats

Before they choose a candidate, each party agrees on a platform. It is the collection of ideas and proposals they want to implement after the election.

The electoral college decides about the presidential candidate. Each state has a certain amount of electors that votes on a candidate.

The electoral college works according to the idea of "the winner takes it all".

The popular vote is not as important - which is sometimes regarded as unfair towards the party that gets more votes but doesn't win the presidency.
