What are ionic compounds made out of? (explain what any key term you use means)

a compound of atoms consisting of a cation (positively charged ion) and an anion (negatively charged ions)

100

What types of atoms are included in most molecules?

Two nonmetals

100

What are polyatomic ions?

ions containing more than one element with an overall charge

100

What is a Lewis dot diagram? (What does it show?)

Consists of a chemical symbol surrounded by one to eight dots representing valence electrons.

100

What does VSEPR stand for?

Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory

200

What happens with the electrons in an ionic compound?

the electrons are donated (transferred) from one atom to another

200

What types of bonds can form during covalent bonding? (Explain what each one is)

Single: sharing of 1 pair of electrons

Double: sharing of 2 pairs of electrons

Triple: sharing of 3 pairs of electrons

200

What groups on the periodic table are cations? anions?

Cations: groups 1, 2, and 13

Anions: 15, 16, and 17

200

Draw a Lewis dot diagram of H2

H : H    or H - H

200

What does Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory tell?

That electrons will orient themselves as far away from each other as possible around the nucleus of an atom.

300

When are roman numerals used in naming ionic compounds?

when the cationdoes not have a fixed charge/is a transition metal.

300

What are atoms in a molecule trying to achieve when forming covalent bonds?

A full outer shell with 8 electrons.

300

Give the name and formula for Lithium reacting with Nitrogen

Lithium nitride

Li3N

300

Draw a lewis dot diagram of an atom of chlorine

Cl with 7 valence electrons

300

Name the orientations:

Linear

400

What should the total charge be on an ionic compound

Neutral

400

What is one exception to the octet rule when  bonding? What are their exceptions?

H can only form one bond consisting of 2 electrons due to its small size

400

Give the name and formula for gallium reacting with acetate

Gallium Acetate

Ga(CH3COO)or Ga(C2H3O2)3

400

What is the octet rule?

Atoms generally react by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons in order to achieve a complete octet of eight valence electrons.

400

Name the following orientation:

(Miss Mackey will draw on board)

Trigonal Planar

500

What is the difference between a lewis dot diagram and a lewis dot structure?

lewis dot diagrams show the separate valence electrons using dots

lewis dot structures show the bonds that form between atoms in a molecule with lines

500

What are polar covalent bonds? (What are they the result of?)

The unequal sharing of electrons in a covalent bond results in a polar covalent bond. The element with higher electronegativity value attracts the shared electrons more strongly, making that portion more negatively charged.

500

Give the name and formula for Fe+3 reacting with hydrogen phosphate

Iron (III) Hydrogen sulfate

Fe(HSO4)3

500

Draw a lewis dot diagram for CH3Cl

C is the central atom with 3 Hydrogen's around it and a Cl. The Cl would have 6 valence electrons on it.

Name the following orientations:

(Miss Mackey will draw on board)
