October 4th of 1824 Mexico adopted their constitution.
It was very similar to the U.S. Constitution in that it created a federalist government.
The differences were that Mexico made Catholicism the official religion and state lawmakers, not the people, would elect the president.

State Colonization Law
in 1824 Mexico formed the state Coahuila y Texas.
This new state would create the State Colonization law of 1825.
In an effort to raise land values and provide new business for tejano merchants, this law further opened Texas to immigration
Texas did allow slavery - it was major component of their economy - and continued to support slavery even after Mexico abolished it in 1829.
(This will become one of the major reasons for revolt in 1835-36)
