What state of matter has the most tightly-packed particles?

Solids

Phase change-Liquid->solid

Freezing

From where do plants directly get energy?

The sun

100

Identify the constants: Mr. Scott wants to find out how the amount of water given to a plant affects the plant's height. He kept the amount of sunlight and type of plant the same.

Amount of sunlight and type of plant.

What is an independent variable?

An independent variable is what the scientist changes directly in an experiment.

200

Why does liquid water take the shape of a cup it is poured into, but solid ice cubes do not?

Because it has an indefinite shape

200

What is the phase change called when liquid turns into gas?

Vaporization or evaporation

200

Are you excited for your science test? Anything you are still confused about?

A student wanted to do an experiment to find out how increasing the speed of a car affects how much gasoline is used.  What is the dependent variable in this experiment?

How much gasoline is used

300

What is a dependent variable?

What the scientist measures that depends on the IV in an experiment.

300

What state of matter's particles slide past each other?

Liquid

300

Is energy increasing or decreasing from liquid->gas?

Increasing

300

What South American country did Mr. Scott visit last summer and jump off a bridge in?

Ecuador

300

Mr. Scott is testing how the number of players in a game of Among Us affects how much time the game takes. What is the independent variable?

The number of players in a game of Among Us

400

Which of these words means the same thing as a constant?

I. Different

II. Similar

III. Same

Same

400

Make the three hand gestures for solid, liquid, and gas.

Must mime all three correctly with their hands.

Solid-two closed fists vibrating

Liquid-two closed fists brushing past each other

Gas-crazy fists

A cool can of soda was set on a table on a hot summer day. A student observed water vapor in the air forming water droplets on the outside of the soda can. What phase change occurred? What happened to the energy as it went from water vapor to water droplets?

Condensation, because gas cooled into a liquid. Energy decreased.

Experiment-Ms. Seiler draws a math problem on the board using a black Expo marker. Then she wipes it with an eraser. She does this three more times, all using different colors of Expo markers. She makes sure to use the same pressure when writing and the same eraser each time. She wants to see if the amount of marker left behind is determined by the color of the marker.

What are the IV, the DV, and the constants?

IV-Color of Expo marker

DV-Amount left behind

Constant-Same amount of pressure when writing and same eraser

Mr. Scott is testing how the number of players in a game of Among Us affects how much time the game takes. What is the dependent variable? Explain.

How much time the game takes. I know this because the dependent variable is what we measure, and it depends on the number of players.

Try to come up with your own experiment, then tell me the IV, DV, and Constants!

Rank solid, liquid, and gas by their amount of energy (most to least).

1. Gas

2. Liquid

3. Solid

500

Going from a gas to a solid, are you adding or removing energy? (Think heat.)

Explain.

Removing, because removing thermal energy (heat) makes something colder, and a gas is the warmest, then liquid, then solid.

500

Describe the differences between solid, liquid, and gas particles. (Think how they look, can use hand motions)

Solids have tightly-packed particles, liquids have loosely-packed particles that slide on each other, and gases have particles all over the place (or use correct hand motions).

Create a scientific question based on the following experiment:

Experiment: Mr. Scott and Ms. Hammond want to figure out if the number of students in a Zoom classroom affects the speed of their WiFi.

Must be in this format-"How does ___ affect ____?"

How does the number of students in a Zoom classroom affect the speed of Mr. Scott and Ms. Hammond's WiFi?
