- A hierarchy of needs from lower order (physiological, safety) to higher order (social, esteem, self-actualisation)

- lower order needs must be met before higher order needs

- once a need is met, it is no longer a motivator and the employee moves up the hierarchy

Support is the assistance or services (such as counselling and mentoring) provided by the business to help the employees cope with difficulties that may impede their work performance.

On the other hand, sanction is a form of penalty or discipline imposed on an employee for poor performance.

A key difference is that support motivates employees by providing encouragement and assistance, while sanction motivates employees as they fear a punishment.

- drive to acquire is similar to physiological needs
- drive to bond is similar to social needs
- drive to learn is similar to self-actualsation needs

Differences:
- Maslows needs is met one at a time, whereas four drives can be met simultaneously
- Maslows needs are on a hierarchy, whereas four drives are of equal importance
- Maslows needs are met in a sequential order, whereas four drives can be met in any order
