1857 - Mexico adopted a new constitution, one that guaranteed the Mexican people freedoms like the ones in the US Bill of Rights. Mexico’s Catholic conservatives were upset with the new liberal, anti-Catholic constitution that took away the Catholic Church’s power to operate courts and gave the government power to confiscate church property. They started this to fight back.
