Which of the following statements about plate tectonics are correct? (Select all that apply)

a – divergent boundaries create new crust as plates move apart
c – subduction occurs when denser oceanic plates sink beneath another plate
d – continental collisions can form mountains without subduction (e.g., Himalayas)
f – mantle convection drives plate movement
incorrect statements:
b – transform boundaries involve horizontal (side-by-side) movement, not vertical
e – oceanic plates are generally younger than continental plates
Which statements about oceanic crust are false? (Select all that apply)

The Red Sea is a long narrow inlet that lies between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The sea began forming about 20 million years ago as the Nubian and Arabian plates began pulling apart. This motion still occurs today, although at just a few millimeters per year. Where is the Red Sea located? (Select all that apply)
a. At the convergent boundary of a rift valley
b. At the divergent boundary of a trench
c. At the divergent boundary of a rift valley
d. At the convergent boundary of a trench
e. At a plate boundary where lithospheric plates are moving apart
f. At a region experiencing tensional stress in the crust
c – the Red Sea formed at a divergent boundary in a rift valley
e – plates are moving apart at this boundary
f – the region experiences tensional stress as the plates pull apart
incorrect statements:
a – it is not a convergent boundary
b – trenches are associated with subduction at convergent boundaries, not divergence
d – it is not a convergent trench

Why is it common to see lush vegetation growing on the windward side of a mountain range and very dry conditions on the leeward side?
When air meets the windward side of a mountain range (the side facing the wind) it rises and begins to experience adiabatic cooling, condensing to form clouds and precipitation. The condensation causes latent heat release, which helps to accelerate the upward movement of the air. Thus, large amounts of precipitation fall on the windward side and the cold, dry air then travels to the leeward side. The air descends and experiences higher pressures as well as adiabatic heating. Here warm, dry air produce arid conditions.
