What is photosynthesis?
Solar energy gets converted to chemical energy in the form of glucose (sugars)
Plants use this process to make food for themselves!
What is cellular respiration
Chemical energy in the form of glucose gets converted to → chemical energy in the form of ATP
What is the carbon cycle?
The carbon cycle is a continuous movement of carbon atoms between earth’s atmosphere, rocks, oceans and living organisms.
This is how carbon is recycled through the planet to sustain life
What is the form of energy at the beginning of photosynthesis?
Solar! Light! Energy from the sun!
What organelles are involved in photosynthesis? What do they do?
Stomata: Gas exchange (take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen)
Chloroplasts: Where light energy is converted to chemical energy (Glucose)
What organelle is involved in cellular respiration? What does it do?
Mitochondria - Where chemical energy is converted to chemical energy in the form of glucose
How does carbon move throughout photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide in reactants to glucose in the products
How does energy move throughout photosynthesis?
Solar energy is converted into chemical energy in the form of glucose in the chloroplast
Can Ms.Perez do photosynthesis? Why or why not? What can she do instead to get energy?
No! Ms.Perez can't do photosynthesis because she doesn't have chloroplasts to convert light energy into glucose! I can break down the food I eat into ATP for my cells which means I can do cellular respiration!
Give an example of a cell that would have more mitochondria than others. Why does it have more?
Muscle cells! They need more energy to help do their jobs like helping us move around!
How does carbon move throughout cellular respiration ?
C6H12O6 in there reactants
CO2 in the products
How does energy move when Mr.Fincham has a belvita biscuit?
(Cellular respiration)Energy in glucose bonds of belvita is released when bonds are broken and the energy converts to ATP which is usable energy for the cells
If Ms.Herren plants her favorite flowers ,but Mr.Fincham moves one pot into the back closet. What will happen to it?
No sunlight! No photosynthesis! Plant will not survive!
How does cellular respiration show the law of conservation of matter?
Think back to the virtual lab with snails and elodea. In one of the test tubes we had a snail, water and the elodea plant. How does this show the cycling of carbon?
- plant does photosynthesis CO2 to C6H12O6
- Snail eats elodea and does cellular respiration C6H12O6 to CO2
What are the types of energies that ATP can be converted into?
Thermal Energy - Heat is released when ATP bonds break
Mechanical Energy - Allows organisms to move/work
Illinois is the top producer of soybeans in the United States. What would happen if there was an extreme drought ?
- No water means no photosynthesis which means crops die
- Less crops means less food for animals or people
- Less crops mean soybean farmers and distributors lose money!
All team members must pick 1 exercise, do it for 5 seconds AND then explain why cellular respiration was important to do that!
Cellular respiration is crucial for exercise because it is the process by which cells generate break down food to energy (ATP) needed for muscle contractions, allowing you to perform physical activity by providing the necessary power to move your muscles during exercise; essentially, without cellular respiration, your body wouldn't have the energy to exercise
How would cutting down all the trees on constitution trail influence the carbon cycle?
When deforestation occurs, much of the carbon stored by trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, there would be an increase in carbon atoms in the atmosphere.
This is a turtle at Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington! The turtle is eat some grass. How is energy moving through this picture?
Solar energy to glucose in the grass for photosynthesis.
Turtle eats grass and glucose bonds break into ATP
ATP can change into Mechanical energy which allows the turtle to move around!
