Antietam-1862

The Union wins a slim victory, forcing Robert E. Lee to retreat from the North back to Virginia. It is the single bloodiest day in the Civil War with over 22,000 casualties. Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation.

Appomattox Court House

Robert E. Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. This ends the bloody conflict of the Civil War (over 620,000 total casualties). In December, 1865 Congress passes the 13th Amendment which outlaws slavery.
