Preston wanted to buy pizza for the entire class. There are 20 people in his class. He figured that each person would eat two slices. Each pie costs $12.00 and has 8 slices. How many pies will Preston need? How much will Preston spend? Explain your thinking.

Preston will need to buy 5 pizza pies. I know this because 20 people * 2 slices each = 40 slices. 8 * ____ = 40 The missing number is 5. If each pie is $12.00 then I will multiply 12 * 5 and get 60. Preston will spend $60 on the 5 pies he is ordering for his class.

Mrs. Chester has 2 flowerbeds to fill up with tulip bulbs. One flowerbed measures 24 feet by 6 feet, and the other bed measures 15 feet by 8 feet. Each bulb needs about a square foot of space. How many tulips can Mrs. Chester plant?

Mrs. Chester can plant a total of 264 tulips in her garden. I know because 24 x 6 = 144 and 15 x 8 = 120. 120+144=264.

Tigger’s doctor said he should walk about 10,000 steps each day for his health, so Tigger bought a Fitbit to record his steps. About 2,120 of Tigger’s steps equal a mile. If Tigger has walked about 4 miles today, how many steps has his Fitbit recorded so far? How many more steps does Tigger need to reach his goal?

Tigger has walked 8,480 steps because 2,120 x 4 = 8,480. Tigger needs to walk 1,520 more steps to reach is goal because 10,000 - 8,480 = 1,520.

Cara’s Lawn Service must work on the Milnes School yard quickly because of a 3:00 p.m. storm prediction. Cara thinks it will take about 30 minutes for each task: trimming the bushes, mowing the lawn, weeding the flower beds, edging the lawn, raking, and cleaning up. They will begin working at 1:00 p.m. How long will it take 1 employee to do the work? How long for 2 employees working together? If you were Cara, how many employees would you send?

It would take 1 employee 180 minutes (3 hours) because there are 6 tasks, so 6x30=180. It would take 2 employees 90 minutes (1 and a half hours) because I divided 180 in half. I would send 2 employees because if they start at 1pm they will be done at 2:30pm, before the storm at 3pm!
