Anya buys 17 ounces of apples and Perry buys 21 ounces of strawberries. What is the ratio of the weight of apples to the weight of strawberries?

What is 17 : 21

Can you make a ratio from 2 yards and 60 inches? Why or why not? What is the ratio?

Yes, you can make a ratio from 2 yards and 60 inches because yards are made up of inches.

2 yards = 72 inches because 2 yards is also 6 feet and 6 feet is 72 inches.

The ratio would be 72 : 60, which simplified equals 36:30 or 6:5.

100

Express the ratio in simplest form. 36 : 20

What is 9 : 5

100

Find the missing term for each pair of equivalent ratios. 9 : 13 = 27 : _______

What is 39.

To get this answer you multiply 9 x 3 to get 27.  What you do to the left you also do to the right, so you must multiply 13 x 3, which equals 39.

200
What is a term? Give an example.
A term is the numbers or quantities that are used in a ratio. Example: 3: 5 :7 ; 3, 5 and 7 are the terms in this ratio.
200

Mari has 123 dollars and Trace has 127 dollars. What is the ratio of Mari's money to Trace's?

What is 123 : 127

200

Can you make a ratio from 3 gallons and 5 tons? Why or why not?

No, you can't make a ratio from these two amounts. Gallons measure capacity and tons measure weight. The two values can't be compared.

200

Express the ratio in simplest form. 24 : 64

The simplest form is  3: 8

200

Find the missing term for each pair of equivalent ratios. 68 : 17 = _____ : 9

The missing number is 36.  First you must simplify 68 : 17 by dividing by 17.  You then end up with the ratio 4 : 1.  From this ratio you can multiply by 9.

300
What are equivalent ratios?
Ratios that are in different forms, but have the same value when simplified.
300

There are 127 students in the science club. 79 of them are girls. What is the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls?

The ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls is 48 to 79, or 48 : 79.

300

Can you make a ratio from 54 kilograms and 54 meters? Why or why not?

No, you can't make a ratio from these two amounts. Kilograms measure weight in the metric system and meters measure distance in the metric system.

300

Express the ratio in simplest form. 45 : 90

What is 1 : 2

300

Find the missing term for each pair of equivalent ratios. 114 : 19 = 60 : _______

The missing term is 10.

First you must simplify 114 : 19 by dividing by 19.  You end up with the simplified ratio of 6 : 1.  From here you can multiply by 10 to get 60 : 10.

400
What is simplest form of a ratio?
A ratio whose terms are whole numbers and have no common factors other than 1.
400

A group of students surveyed chose football and soccer as their favorite sports in a ratio of 3 : 8. If 297 students were surveyed, find the number of students that chose football as their favorite sport.

Thee were 81 students that chose football as their favorite sport.

The ratio has 11 parts in all, there is also 297 students that were surveyed in all.  To find one part of the ratio, you divide the total number of students by the parts of the ratio.  297 divided by 11 = 27 students per part.  Since there are 3 parts of the ratio that represent football, 3 x 27 = 81.

400

Can you make a ratio from 87 feet and 93 yards? Why or why not? If you can make a ratio what is the ratio in simplest form?

Yes, you can make a ratio from feet and yards because they are both US Customary measurement units and they both measure length or distance. There are 3 feet in 1 yard, so 87 feet is equal to 29 yards. The ratio would be 29 yards : 93 yards.

400

Express the ratio in simplest form. How did you find the simplest form? Be ready to explain your thinking. 9 yards : 9 feet

What is 9 yards : 3 yards, which equals 3 : 1 when simplified. This was found by converting feet into yards. 3 feet equals 1 yard. Therefore, 9 feet is equal to 3 yards.

Find the missing term in each of the following:

a.) 39 : 130 = 21 : _____

b.) 84 : 24 = _____ : 14

a.) The missing term is 70.  To find this you have to reduce both 39 and 130 by dividing with 13.  You end up with the ratio 3 : 10.  From here you can multiply by 7 to get 21 : 70.

b.) The missing term is 49.  First you must divide both 84 and 24 by 12.  You end up with the ratio

7 : 2.  From here you can multiply by 7 to get the ratio 49 : 14.

London's monthly allowance is $42 and Brennan's monthly allowance is $63. How many times London's allowance is Brennan's monthly allowance?

Brennan's allowance is 1.5 times the amount of London's monthly allowance.

To begin this problem, you know that Brennan's allowance is more than London's.  Since his allowance is bigger, you divide his allowance by London's allowance.  63 divided by 42 = 1.5.  Therefore, Brennan's allowance is 1.5 more than London's allowance.

You can check your work by taking London's allowance, of $42, and half of her allowance, $21, and adding them together to get $63.

500

Can you make a ratio from 20 weeks and 91 days? Why or why not? If you can make a ratio, what is the ratio in simplest form?

Yes, you can make a ratio with weeks and days because they both measure time. There is 7 days in 1 week. 91 days divided by 7 is equal to 13 weeks. The new ratio would be 20 weeks : 13 weeks.

Jonas is making a fruit punch for his holiday party. He uses 5 ounces of lemonade for every 9 ounces of pineapple juice to make the fruit punch.

A. Find the ratio of the number of ounces of pineapple juice to the number of ounces of lemonade he uses.

B. If Jonas uses 36 ounces of pineapple juice to make the fruit punch, how many ounces of lemonade does he use?

C. If Jonas uses 45 ounces of lemonade to make the fruit punch, how many ounces of pineapple juice does he use?

A. The ratio of pineapple juice to lemonade is 9 : 5. B.If Jonas uses 36 ounces of pineapple juice that would mean that each part of the punch would be 4 ounces. Therefore, he would use 20 ounces of lemonade.

C. If Jonas uses 45 ounces of lemonade, 45 divided by 5 parts would be 9 ounces per part. That would mean that Jonas would use 81 ounces of pineapple juice.

Lola has a box of red, blue, and green markers. The ratio of the number of red markers to the number of blue markers is 5 : 2. The ratio of the number of blue markers to the number of green markers is 3 : 5. What is the ratio of the number of red markers to the number of green markers?

The ratio of the number of red markers to the number of green markers is 3 : 2.

First, you need to combine your two ratios into one ratio with three values.  Our first ratio is red:blue and 5:2; our 2nd ratio is blue:green and 3:5.  The common color in both ratios is blue.  Since neither 2 or 3 can fit into each other you need to change both ratios before combining.

Since the ratios for blue are 2 in one ratio and 3 in the other, you can multiply 2 x 3 to get 6.

In the first ratio you multiply both numbers by 3 to get red = 15 and blue = 6.  In the second ratio you will multiply by 2 to get blue =6 and green = 10.

That leaves us with a ratio of red:blue:green and the numbers 15:6:10.

Now, we have a ratio for read:green markers, which is 15:10.  When we simplify the ratio we get 3:2.
