What sense do dogs use to smell things?

The sense of smell.

Scientists are studying two different animals. One animal hunts for prey at night, while the other hunts for prey during the day.

State a claim about how they see light is most accurate?

The night hunter has high sensitivity light receptors while the day hunter has low sensitivity light receptors.

How do animals use their eyes to stay safe?

Animals use their eyes to detect predators and find food.

300

Why can we see a rainbow after it rains?

Light refracts and reflects in water droplets, creating a spectrum of colors.

300

What is the purpose of a flower in a plant?

Flowers help in reproduction by attracting pollinators.

300

How do fish breathe underwater?

Fish have gills that help extract oxygen from the water.

A student observed that a cactus has long, sharp spines that are painful to touch.

State a claim that is best supported by the observation?

The spines make it hard for animals to eat the cactus.

300

What type of information do animals get from their environment through sounds?

Animals can hear danger or communicate with others.

400

Name one object that can help you see at night by reflecting light.

A cat’s eyes or a reflector.

Two students investigated the growth of pea plants.
Each student had three pots. The possible variables were water, temperature, and sunlight. All of the pots contained the same type and amount of soil. They planted pea seeds in each pot.
The students set up their investigations as shown in the table below.

Which student had the best setup to find out how the amount of sunlight affects the growth of pea plants?

Carmen

Why is it important for animals to process information from their senses?

It helps them respond to their environment and survive.

500

What happens to light when it hits an object?

The light bounces off the object allowing us to see the item.

Students decide to replace part of a school’s grass lawn with native plants. Healthy grass lawns usually need a lot of care to be healthy. Native plants need less care because they are adapted to grow well in local conditions. The students decide to use buffalo grass, which is native to the school area. Buffalo grass needs less water and fertilizer than other types of grass and can live through periods without rain. Like other types of grass, buffalo grass spreads out to cover the ground. Above ground stems, called stolons, grow outward from existing grass plants. New leaves and roots grow from the stolons, forming new plants. Buffalo grass only grows 8–10 inches high and the leaves tend to topple over and look short, so it requires less mowing as well.

Provide the best evidence that stolons help the plant reproduce?

The separated plants continue to grow.

How do animals respond differently to different types of information they receive?

Animals may flee from danger or approach food, depending on the information received.
