In the 1600s, people in England could be fined or put in jail if they did not belong to the Church of England. Some people responded by leaving England so they could practice religion in their own way. One group came to North America. They founded a colony in present-day Massachusetts. Their new home brought new challenges. One of their biggest concerns was how to grow enough food for the colony. Luckily, a Native American named Tisquantum, or Squanto, helped them survive by showing them local ways to plant crops.
