What is a sound?

A vibration

100
Earth was once one big continent called:

Pangea

100

What is the name of the place where tectonic plates meet?

Plate boundaries.

100

What is an opaque object?

An object through which light does not pass.

200

Sounds vary in..

Loudness and pitch

200

What is the crust of the earth made of?

Solid rock

200

What happens when tectonic plates move apart from each other?

They can become thin and crack.

200

Explain the position of the Sun, the Moon and Earth during a solar eclipse.

The moon is between the Sun and the Earth.

300

Explain the movement of the sound wave and of the air particles.

The direction of sound wave: ---->

Air particles: <---> (they move backwards and forwards)

300

What layer of the Earth is molten?

The mantle
Molten means: hot liquid

300

How are volcanoes formed?

When tectonic plates move part, lava can erupt from the mantle and it hardens to form new crust with new rocks. This causes a volcano.

300

What is Umbra?

It's the shadow's dark center, where the solar eclipse is total. The sun is completely covered by the moon.

400

What is an echo?

An echo is a reflection of a sound wave.

400

Explain the evidence behind the continental drift theorized by....

This theory was advanced by scientist Wegener. He found evidence that:

The shapes of the continents fit together
The types of rocks on the different continents match up where they fit together
The fossils on the different continents match up where they fit together.

400
What is the name of the movement when one tectonic plate slides underneath another one?

Subduction.

400

What is an annular eclipse?

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and Sun, but does not completely cover the Sun's disk. Instead, it covers most of the Sun, leaving its outer edge visible as a bright ring or “annulus” around the darkened Moon.

500

Explain useful echoes.

Useful echoes: bats emit sound waves to get attack their preys (which reflect the bat's sound wave). This way the bat knows where the prey is.

Boats can also use echoes to find the depth of the water.

500

What are tectonic plates?

A tectonic plate is a massive slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic plates that move regularly.

500

Explain the phenomenon of fold mountains.

When tectonic plates move together, the rocks crumble and fold upwards.

500

Why does the Moon turn red during a lunar eclipse?

During a lunar eclipse, the Moon appears red because the Earth's atmosphere filters out most of the sunlight / blue light (this is why our sky is blue!). This leaves only the red wavelengths of light, which are able to pass through the Earth's atmosphere more easily due to their longer wavelengths.
