The illustration shows the part of the story when Curly fights a wolf. This is clear because in the 3rd and 4th paragraph it says "Curly rushed her antagonist, who struck again and leaped aside. He met her next rush. It did not take long. Two minutes from the time curly went down, the last of her saline were clubbed off. But she lay their limp and lifeless in the bloody, trampled snow, almost literally torn to pieces." The picture contributes to the scary/dangerous tone because you can see the angry look on both dogs' faces.

This story is about a man named Androcles and a lion. Androcles escaped from his master and ran into the woods. When he ran into the woods he came across a lion who had thorn stuck in his paw. Androcles helped the lion and he licked him to show he was grateful. The lion then took care of Androcles including giving him shelter and food.They were both captured and not fed for days. The emperor ordered to have Androcles thrown in with the lion. When he was thrown into the arena with the lion, the lion did not eat him because that is his friend. In the end, The emperor let both of them go.
