One of the first things Pope Paul III did was to encourage new religious orders within the Church to help promote reform. Perhaps the most influential of these Catholic organizations was the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, as they were also known. Ignatius of Loyola, a Spanish priest, had founded the Jesuits several years earlier.

Erasmus could sense the tensions rising on both sides in the Reformation. He abhorred violence. Frederick was in a tricky position. He had received a letter from the pope urging him to turn Luther over to Church officials in Rome. Frederick didn’t necessarily agree with Luther’s ideas on religion. However, as ruler of the region in which Luther lived, he didn’t like the pope telling his subjects what to do, either. In fact, Frederick wanted to increase the power of the German nobility. Not only that, he was tired of sending German money to Rome to pay for perceived papal extravagance. He also suspected that Luther, a German, would not be treated fairly in Rome.
WHAT ARE THREE REASONS FREDERICK DIDN'T WANT TO SEND LUTHER TO ROME?
*Pope telling subjects what to do
*Wanted to increase power of German Nobility
*Tired of sending German money to Rome
*Luther wouldn't be treated fairly.

As you read in Chapter 5, Copernicus took the first revolutionary steps toward overturning the geocentric model of the universe. Through careful observations of the night sky and mathematical calculations, Copernicus worked out that the earth, along with the other planets, orbits the sun. No one knows exactly when Galileo read Copernicus’s book, On the Revolutions of Heavenly Orbs, which was printed in 1543 CE. In 1597 CE, however, Galileo corresponded with Johannes Kepler, a German astronomer who was also convinced, based on his observations, that the earth traveled around the sun. In one letter, Galileo acknowledged that he agreed with Copernicus. He also mentioned that publicly agreeing with Copernicus’s ideas was a risky thing to do, because it went against accepted beliefs about the universe.
WHY WAS GALILEO STRUGGLING TO PUBLICLY AGREE WITH COPERNICUS'S IDEAS?
He knew it was a risky thing to do because it went against the accepted beliefs about the universe.

Erasmus was a devout Catholic and respected the Catholic faith. But he was dismayed by the corruption and abusive use of power he saw among some Church leaders. Erasmus’s goal was to use the power of the written word to stimulate Church reform. In his writings, he urged Catholics to more closely follow the examples and teachings of Jesus. He stressed focusing less on rituals and ceremonies and more on the religious meaning behind them. He felt that Christians should not obey Church leaders blindly. Instead, they should study Jesus’s life and teachings by reading the Bible themselves.
By advocating these ideas, Erasmus paved the way for Luther and other Protestant reformers. Unlike Luther and those who followed him, however, Erasmus never tried to break away from the Catholic Church. He hoped to improve it from within—peacefully and thoughtfully.
