Two boats leave an island at the same time. Boat 1 travels 12 miles east and then 16 miles north. Boat 2 travels 24 miles south and then 18 miles west. What is the distance between the two boats? (NOTE that the axis intervals are different!)

Method 1:

12^2 + 16^2 = 400 -> c= sqrt(400) = 20

24^2 + 18^2 = 900 -> c = sqrt(900) = 30

20 + 30 = 50

Method 2:

18 + 12 = 30,  16 +24 = 40

30^2 + 40^2 = 2500 -> c= sqrt(2500) = 50
