What does the earth do that causes day and night?

What is rotation?
100

The ______ two objects are, the _____ the gravitational pull.

Closer/ Greater

100

The season that gets the most daylight hours.

What is summer?

100

All light can travel through the item. Examples: Glass, water, air

What is transparent?

100

The closest star to Earth.

What is the sun?

200

What season has the least daylight and why?

The least amount of sunlight appears in Winter. During winter, the Northern Hemisphere leans away from the sun, there are fewer daylight hours, and the sun hits us at an angle.

200

Gravity pulls in this direction.

What is toward the Earth's core?

200

The season that gets the least amount of daylight.

What is winter?

200

Some light can travel through the item (examples: frosted glass, wax paper)

What is translucent?

200

How can we see the sun if the light isn’t reflected off of it?

It produces its own light. A star is a huge sphere of very hot, glowing gas.

300

Shadows appear_____ as the sun gets closer to the horizon.

What is longer?

300

Send your team captain to the board to draw a diagram of how gravity impacts people.

300

What season is it in the northern hemisphere when the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun?

What is summer?

300

What is Opaque? Include examples.

No light can travel through the item (example: wood, metal, tightly woven fabric)

300

Why does the distance from a star impact how bright it appears?

The closer the star is to us, the brighter it appears. But, if the star is farther away, then it appears dull. As the distance increases from the star, the light must spread out over a larger surface causing the brightness to decrease.

400

Explain the difference between apparent brightness and absolute brightness.

Apparent: The brightness of a star as seen from Earth.

Absolute: The actual brightness of a star from a standard distance (3.26 light-years.)

400

Gravity depends on these two things.

What is mass and distance?

400

If the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing winter, what will the southern hemisphere be experiencing?

What is summer?

400

Define shadow

What is a dark area where an object blocks the light?

400

What type of constellations never set below the horizon when seen from a particular location on Earth. These types of constellations can be seen in the night sky throughout the year, while other constellations are seasonal, visible only at certain times of year.

What are circumpolar constellations?

500

Why do some stars appear brighter in the night sky, even when they produce different amounts of light than other stars?

1) The Star's Actual Brightness

2) The Star’s Distance from Us

Just because a star looks brighter, doesn’t mean it actually is brighter. A star’s brightness also depends on its proximity to us.

500

The greater the ______, the greater the _________ pull.

Mass, gravitational

500

It's July, the coldest month of the year. What hemisphere are we in?

What is the southern hemisphere?

500

Coen sees a capybara sitting on the river bank at noon. Explain the path of light.

The sun produces light, which travels to the capybara, reflects of it and then travels to Coen's eyes.

500

What process enables stars to produce their own light?

Stars produce their own light and energy by a process called nuclear fusion.
