Layers of the Atmosphere
The lowest of the atmospheric layers & it's where all weather takes place
What is the Troposphere?
a collection of small water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air, which forms when the air is cooled & condensation occurs
the heat energy that's absorbed or released by a substance during a phase change
What is latent heat?
an instrument that measures and indicates temperature
What is a thermometer?
a brief, heavy storm with rain, wind, lightning, and thunder
What is a thunderstorm?
This layer contains the ozone layer & it's where most planes maintain their altitude
What is the Stratosphere?
a low-level, billowy cloud that commonly has a top that resembles cotton balls & has a dark bottom
What is a cumulus cloud?
movement of matter due to differences in density caused by temperature variations; heat rises while the cold sinks
What is convection?
this measures rainfall amounts
What is a rain gauge?
a destructive, rotating, funnel-shaped column of air with high wind speeds
What is a tornado?
This is the coldest layer & it's where meteorites burn up
What is the Mesosphere?
a gray cloud that has a flat uniform base & that commonly forms at very low altitudes; cover large areas of sky & often block out the sun
What is a stratus cloud?
the transfer of energy as heat through a material; transferring heat through direct touch or contact
What is conduction?
this measures precipitation intensity
What is a Doppler radar?
a severe storm that develops over tropical oceans, whose strong winds spiral in toward the low-pressure storm center
What is a hurricane?
This is where the ionosphere & the Auroras are contained
What is the Thermosphere?
a feathery cloud that's composed of ice crystals & that has the highest altitude of any cloud in the sky
What is a cirrus cloud?
all forms of energy that travel through space as waves
What is radiation?
this is an instrument used to measure wind speed
What is an anemometer?
the front edge of a moving mass of cold air that pushes beneath a warmer air mass like a wedge
This layer is the starting point into outer space
What is the Exosphere?
clouds that form at the earth's surface
What is fog?
all of the frequencies or wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation
What is the Electromagnetic spectrum?
this is an instrument that measures atmospheric pressure
What is a barometer?
the front edge of advancing warm air mass that replaces colder air with warmer air
