Punctuated equilibrium - there isn't a lot of change for a while and then there's suddenly a lot of change

Gradualism - the environment changes slowly and steadily, causing slow and steady evolution

Directional Selection - shift towards one extreme

Stabilizing Selection - average phenotype is favored

Disruptive Selection - both extremes are favored

coevolution - species evolve together, impacting each other (bees and flowers)

convergent evolution - two unrelated species wind up looking similar because of similar environments

Explain how polyploidy happens and how it can lead to speciation

When polyploidy happens due to nondisjunction in meiosis, the F1 generation (polyploid) has a different number of chromosomes than the rest of the population. Because of this, it is unable to mate with its parent species and therefore becomes a new species.

What is the "RNA world" hypothesis?

RNA was the first complex molecule and it led to the first cells. Because RNA now is the main component of protein synthesis (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA), then it could make proteins, and it could catalyze reactions through ribozymes. It also could self replicate.
