What was Sherman's March To Sea?

As the army moved toward Savannah, Georgia, the troops lived off the land.  The troops ate what they wanted from what was left behind by the southerners who fled their homes.  What the Union troops did not eat was destroyed.  They set fields with crops on fire and killed animals.  They also burnt homes, barns, tore up all railroad tracks, and destroyed anything that would be useful to the Confederates. This type of destruction is called total war.
