A dependent clause cannot be a sentence on its own. An independent clause can be a sentence on its own. Bonus: a clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb. When there is a dependent and an independent clause together we call this a complex sentence.

Who are the characters? What is the setting? What is the plot?
Characters are who the story is about. The setting is where the story takes place (time, place, weather conditions, etc.). The plot is the events of the story (beginning, middle, end).
