What can scientists do to see if their investigations are reliable?

Repeat them!

100

Name three landforms

mountain, river, lake, coastline, dune, delta, glacier

100
Name the two types of weathering

Physical weathering and chemical weathering

100

What is erosion?

Sediments being moved

100

Name two natural sources of air pollution

volcanos, gas from cow manure, wildfires

200

Which of these is a model:

-A list of supplies

-A globe

-An eraser

A globe

200

What is a delta and how are deltas formed?

A delta is a deposit of sediment where a river slows as it enters the ocean.

200

What is physical weathering?

When physical actions wear away and crack rocks

200

This is sediments being left in a new place

Deposition

200

Name two human sources of air pollution.

vehicle exhaust, factories, burning fossil fuels

300

Give an example of a model

any one of there: a picture, a 3D model, a drawing, a virtual lab etc.

300

What is a dune and how are dunes connected to Florida?

A dune is a mound of wind-deposited sand. Florida has coastal dunes behind sandy beaches.

300

What is chemical weathering?

When different kinds of weathering break the bonds that hold the minerals together and turn it into a whole new substance

300

Describe the chain of events in the movement of sediments.

 Weathering --------> Erosion -----------> Deposition

300

This is an increase in population in cities and towns with people moving away from the country

Urbanization

400

Why do scientists use models?

To help study things that are too big, too small, or too time-consuming to see happen.

400

What is a mountain and how are mountains connected to Florida?

A mountain is an area of high elevation. Sediments from the Appalachian Mountains were transported to Florida by rivers and streams to help form the land here.

400

Name a type of chemical weathering and a type of physical weathering.

Chemical: oxidation, groundwater acid, acid rain, or plant acid

Physical: Plant action, Animal action, Abrasion, Exfoliation, Ice Wedging

400

How do rough waves impact beaches?

Rough waves can wash small sediment away and leave only rocky coastline behind.

400

This is when too many animals live on a small amount of land and destroy the roots of the grass that holds the soil in place.

Overgrazing

500

Name the three types of variables in a controlled experiment

independent, dependent, control

500

What is a glacier and how are glaciers connected to Florida?

A glacier is a large mass of ice. When glaciers melted many years ago, the sea level around Florida rose and cause the size and shape of Florida to change.

500

How are chemical and physical weathering similar and how are they different?

Both break down rocks.

Physical breaks down rocks mechanically into smaller, or differently shaped pieces but they’re still the same chemically.  Chemical changes the makeup of the rock into something that can’t be put back.

500

 How does sedimentary rock form?

By sand and other materials being deposited and hardening over time

500

What are two of the human impacts that can lead to desertification and erosion?

overgrazing, deforestation and urbanization
