The U.S. supported South Korea, while the USSR supported North Korea. North Korea invaded South Korea, causing U.S. and UN troops to be sent to support South Korea in pushing back communist forces. They made it all the way back to the Chinese border when the Chinese communist forces aided North Korea in pushing back South Korean forces. They met at a stalemate at the 38th parallel (now known as the DMZ), where they remain today.
