The Constitution
The first form of written government in the United States. Created after we win the American revolution. Was very weak due to fear of a monarchy and potential limits on rights.
Articles of Confederation
This freed the slaves in the states in rebellion against the United States
Emancipation Proclamation
These individuals became wealthy at the expense of others.
Captains of Industry/ Robber Barons
The causes for this were yellow journalism, sinking of the U.S.S. Maine, humanitarian support for the Cubans and expansion for the United States.
Spanish American War
A way of purchasing goods, in which the consumer pays for goods in small increments over time
Installment Plan (Buying on Credit)
They make the laws. They can declare war, borrow money, tax, coin money, impeachment, override a veto.
Legislative Branch
This amendment abolished slavery
13th Amendment
Describe the working conditions in the early 1800's
Long hours, no insurance, dirty facilities.
Hawaii
This group of individuals did not receive the benefits of the booming economy in the 1920's.
Farmers
This is known as the Elastic Clause, also known as the implied powers. Allows Congress to stretch their powers to adapt to changing times (Ex: Speed limits).
Necessary and Proper Clause
This act allowed all runaway slaves in the North can be re-captured and returned to owners
This was the law that gave government owned land to settlers going west for a low fee
Homestead Act
This provided an easier route to Asia
Panama Canal
This was the fear of Communism spreading to the United States
Red Scare
They grant us our individual rights, limits the power of the federal government.
Bill of Rights
This Supreme Court Case decision declared that slaves could not sue in a court of law because they were considered property, not citizens.
Scott vs. Sanford
The purpose of this act was to assimilate Native Americans into society and to make them small farmers
Dawes Act
This told Europe to stay out of the Western Hemisphere and to not interfere with the independence movements of Latin America.
Monroe Doctrine
The U.S. Attorney General ordered the Justice Department to hunt down suspected Communists and anarchists.
Palmer Raids
These individuals urged people NOT to ratify the Constitution until a Bill of Rights was added.

This was Lincolns primary goal before the Civil War
To preserve the Union
These were African Americans who moved West after the Civil War

US would control other countries by increasing American investment abroad. This would help American business interests in Latin America

These individuals were Anarchist Italian immigrants convicted of murder. They were executed despite questionable evidence. Later on they were cleared of charges in 1977
