The Cuban Missile Crisis was a period of Tension between the United States and the USSR. The USSR's new ally, Cuba, had just undergone a Communist Revolution under Fidel Castro. Confident in his new regime, Castro allowed the USSR to house Nuclear Missiles in their country in exchange for aid and protection. The united states, fearing a communist takeover in the United States, ordered the USSR to remove the weapons from Cuba. The USSR refused and said they would agree if the United States removed their Missiles from Turkey (a neighbor of the USSR). The tensions rose greatly until the US and USSR made a deal to remove missiles from both nations. The optics showed Khrushchev backing down, making the United States look very good.
