The Alien and Sedition Acts

Summary: The Alien and Sedition Acts were laws passed that extended the years immigrants had to wait before becoming a U.S citizens, the president had the power to deport without trial and prevent sedition to rebel. The Alien and Sedition Acts limited the rights of foreigners without a fair say.


Result: the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions: introduced the theory of interposition. Arguing the states to take control of this unconstitutional law passed by the federal government.

The Quasi-War With France

Summary: The Quasi War was started by the french seizing goods from american ships after jays treaty. Once 3 americans were sent to france to negotiate, 3 french agents were sent back. They were referred to as “X,Y, and Z”. These 3 agents demanded a bribe of money which was turned down by the americans. This incident was called the XYZ affair and the 2 nations ended trade and went to war. Later, the 2 nations signed the convention of 1800 that released america from the treaty of 1778 and ended the quasi war.

Jay’s Treaty and Pinckney’s Treaty


Summary: In Jay’s Treaty, the British forced him to allow the British to seize an cargo going to French ports and in return, the British gave up their forts in American territory and also gave the United States most favored nation status. The treaty was signed by Washington avoiding war and protecting the American economy. Jay’s Treaty contributed to the United States winning concessions from the Spanish. In Pinckney’s Treaty, the United States had the right to navigate through the Mississippi to get to New Orleans to drop off goods.
