Historical context means the situation and background of a certain time period (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How). What is the historical context of the Spanish American War?
What is Cuba was a colony of Spain that wanted independence. However, they failed to overthrow Spain's rule and suffered in concentration camps as a result. The US wanted to expand their influence, power, and trade opportunities, so they were motivated to intervene in countries. Going to war was a bit of a stretch, but with the combination of sugar and rice plantations being burned and yellow journalists using the Maine explosion to outrage Americans, the US joined. The war was fought in the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico in 1898, and the US won easily demonstrating itself as a world, imperialist power opposed to the end of Spain being a world power.
