Because he was part demon due to being scratched as a kid however the demon in him didn't truly take over him but is still within him. When he got turned, his human self died and when Owen and Pyro killed him, his vampire self died but his feral demon self may still be alive even if it takes another 200 years for him to wake up (basically his body is still alive but not his soul or something like that)
