A doctor has just removed a mass off of a patient and is ready to put it in a formalin jar that is being held by a tech. What PPE should be worn by the tech and doctor?

Both parties need to be wearing safety glasses, gloves, and have long sleeves to avoid getting any formalin on their skin or in their eyes.

Hazards: Causes skin irritation, may cause an allergic skin reaction, causes serious eye damage, suspected of causing cancer, causes damage to organs

Someone who is a known contact wearer has just gotten some of the Diff Quix Fixative solution (the light blue one) into their eyes! What should you do to help them?

Per the SDS, lead them to the eye wash station! Immediately flush their eyes with plenty of water, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Check for and remove any contact lenses. Continue to rinse for at least 10 minutes. Get medical attention. If necessary, call a poison center or physician.

In fiscal year 2024, federal OSHA investigated 826 worker deaths, an 11 percent reduction from 928 in the previous year. Excluding Covid-related deaths, this is the lowest number of worker fatalities OSHA has been mandated to investigate since FY 2017

Ouch! You have just stabbed a clean needle into your hand while trying to recap it using two hands. What should you do now? What is the proper way to recap a needle according to OSHA?

Report the injury in the injury log (located on the shelf above the Procyte) 

We should never be recapping needles, but when it is necessary, the one-handed scoop method should be used.  This involves holding the syringe in one hand, placing the cap on a flat surface, and using the needle to scoop the cap on, then pushing it securely into place with the same hand.

How long does Rescue have to sit to be effective in getting rid of kennel cough, Parvovirus, CIV, FELV, and ringworm?

 5 minutes. It is also effective against Enterococcus, Microsporum Canis, Streptococcus, and more!

**Dilutions are different for different types of pathogens! Please check the bottle:1:16 for bactericidal and fungicidal action, 1:16 to 1:64 for virucidal action, and 1:128 for broad-spectrum non-food contact surface sanitization.

Each fire extinguisher has a dial with a red zone and a green zone. As long as the arrow is still in the green zone and the tubing is intact, and the pin is in place, it is safe to use!

Yes. 51lbs is the maximum.

OSHA does not have a standard which sets limits on how much a person may lift or carry. However, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a mathematical model that helps predict the risk of injury based on the weight being lifted and other criteria which equates to 51lbs maximum average.

Using the spill kit located hanging on the wall across from the doctors' offices and next to the dental suite. The spill kit can be used for the cleanup of any liquid (ie. blood, flood waters, sewage) or chemical product (whether it's classed as hazardous or not)

A client needs a refill of methimazole. What steps do you take when filling it and why are these steps taken?

Methimazole is absorbable through the skin. You must wear gloves AND use a separate, designated tray and pill counter when filling. Also make sure to label the client's bottle with the caution when handling and wear gloves stickers.

Lead gowns, gloves, and thyroid shields need to be tested every 6 months. They must pass a physical, visual, and xray inspection

It's important that exits and the hallways leading to them are free of obstructions in case of emergencies. How many inches of hallway must be kept clear at all times?

36 inches. The hallway we dump boxes in is 56 inches, so please keep this in mind on days we receive a lot of boxes. They cannot stay in the hallway if exceeding that 36 inches and need to be taken out to the dumpster immediately.

You need a GHS secondary label. On the label you must include: Product Identifier (The name of the chemical or product as it appears on the SDS), General Hazard Information (Words, pictures, or symbols that convey the physical and health hazards of the hazardous material), Date of Transfer/Preparation, Concentration (if applicable), Name of Person who Transferred or Prepared
