This Battle on May 11, 1969, became the scene of a controversial battle in Vietnam. Military planners knew this hill as Hill 937 because of its height in meters. Taking this hill was part of Operation Apache Snow; this was a U.S. military sweep of the Shau Valley. This was controversial because it was to cut off the North Vietnamese infiltration from Laos and any other enemy threats in the cities of Hue and Da Nang.

This was one of the most iconic battles of the Vietnam War. The North Vietnamese forces engaged the U.S. forces in very tight quarters. The cavalry regiment then proceeded to return fire, but the enemy was dug into fighting positions that had been prepared previously. Many of the American leaders had died or were severely injured during the initial stages of this attack.

March 16th, 1968, Lieutenant William L. Calley Jr. and his crew killed 300 Vietnamese Civilians and as many as 500 at a South Vietnamese sub-hamlet called this. Calley and his crew, despite expecting heavy resistance, entered this without receiving any fire or without any defense. Calley encountered unarmed, unresisting, and frightened elderly men, women, children, and babies. The villagers were found doing daily chores and eating breakfast in their homes.
