What instruments are driven by the pitot-static system and how do they work?

Pitot tube: An open tube facing forward that measures the impact or "ram air" pressure from the aircraft's forward motion. As the aircraft's speed increases, this pressure increases. 

Static ports: Vents typically flush-mounted on the side of the fuselage that measure static air pressure, which is the pressure of the air around the aircraft, undisturbed by its motion. 

Pitot static lines: Tubes that connect the pitot tube and static ports to the flight instruments. 

Airspeed Indicator (ASI): Uses both the pitot tube and static port pressure. The ASI measures the difference between the ram air pressure (total pressure) and the static air pressure. The greater the difference, the faster the aircraft is moving. 

Altimeter: Measures altitude by sensing changes in static air pressure. As the aircraft climbs, static pressure decreases, and the altimeter registers a higher altitude. 

Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI): Senses the rate of change in static air pressure. It uses a calibrated leak to create a pressure differential with the static port, which indicates a climb or descent rate in feet per minute.

Activities such as eating meals, engaging in nonessential conversations within the cockpit and nonessential communications between the cabin and cockpit crews, and reading publications not related to the proper conduct of the flight are not required for the safe operation of the aircraft.
