Anamnesis
A special kind of remembering when we recall a past event that reoccurs in the present.
Logos
Jesus's name and a Greek word that translates to "word" and means "thought, logic, or meaning."
Epiclesis
The Greek word for "invocation" or "calling upon." It occurs during the liturgy when the priests call upon the Holy Spirit.
Litany
Form of prayer, spoken or sung, involving a dialogue between the leader and people assembled. The people respond to each phrase said or sung by the leader with constant refrain or acclamation.
Sponsor
A person who stands with the confirmation candidate as a sign of support and reminder of their baptism.
Communion
The sharing of Christ's Body and Blood in the Liturgy.
Lectionary
A book that contains readings that have been selected for proclamation during the Church's liturgies throughout the year. The readings are from the Bible.
Transubtantiation
Change that takes place when the bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass.
Baptism
First of 7 Sacraments of the Church. Through Baptism, people become united to the Christ and the Church.
Venial Sins
see sin, venial. A sin that can be forgiven easily and isn't that bad.
Eucharist
Mass or the Lord's Supper. Eucharist is based on a Greek term for "Thanksgiving"
Ambo
A reading stand where Scripture is proclaimed.
Orans
Prayer pasture involves raising one's eyes and extending both hands upward. It resembles the stance of a young child wanting to be picked up.
The process through which unbaptized adults and children who have reached the age of reason are initiated into the Church.

Presider
The priest or bishop who leads liturgical activity, such as Mass. Only ordained priests and bishops can preside at Mass.
Liturgy of the Eucharist
Major part of the Mass. Includes Presentation and Preparation of Gifts, Eucharistic Prayer, and Communion Rite.
Lord's Prayer
Sacred Chrism
Perfumed oil, consecrated by the Bishop, which is used for a special anointing in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders that signifies the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Contrition
Sorrow for one's sins.
Liturgy of the Word
Consists of readings from the Bible, a homily by a bishop, priest, or deacon, the Creed, and prayers for the Church, the world, and the people in need.
Eucharistic Prayer
The Church's great prayer of thanksgiving to the Father. It includes the consecration of bread and wine.
Sign of Peace
Part of Mass when people are invited to share a sign of Christ's peace with one another.
Age of Reason
Absolution
Freeing from guilt. Takes place during the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, when the priest pardons sins in the name of God and the Church.
