100

What is Lava that has a smooth billowy surface

Pahoehoe

100

Define what a Rift is?

A deep crack that forms between two tectonic plates as they separate.

100

What is a body of magma that has hardened underground?

Pluton

100

Describe Three illustrations for 3 of the Volcano Eruption Types?

Teacher Decides

100

What other problems can be caused by volcanic eruptions?

Pyroclastic flow can tear down trees and destroy buildings

200

What is a place where one tectonic plate is pushed under another tectonic plate

Subduction zone

200

True or False: Laccoliths are vertical plutons. If false, explain why.

False. Dikes are vertical plutons

200

Define and draw what aa is.

Lava that has a rough surface

200

A volcano with a gentle slope and made mostly of lava flows is

Shield Volcano

200

What Causes a Volcano to Bulge?

Rising magma can cause a volcano to bulge

300

What is a place on the earth’s surface that is directly above a column of rising magma

Hot spot

300

Tectonic plates spread apart and magma rises through the gap to form a volcano. Where does this occur?

Divergent plate boundary

300

Which of following can Volcanos Grow... with intrusive rock, extrusive rock or both

Both

300

A volcano that only has a plug left is most likely

Extinct

300

What can cause a drop in global temperature?

A large cloud of volcanic ash

400

What is an instrument that uses liquid to register changes in the earth

Tiltmeter

400

Which type of activity creates the most violent volcano?

Oceanic-oceanic plate collision

400

What is Viscosity and why is it important in relation to Lava Flow?

- The speed at which lava flows. The silicate level determines its thickness.

400

List the types of eruptions in order from most violent to least violent.

Plinian, Peléan, Vulcanian, Strombolian, Hawaiian, Icelandic

400

Explain how pumice and diamonds are useful in the industrial industry.

Pumice is included in some hand soaps and cleaners because of its abrasive qualities. Diamonds can be used for cutting, grinding, drilling, and polishing

500

What is a volcanic crater that is formed by the collapse of surface rock into an empty magma chamber

Caldera

500

How are volcanoes important to creation?

Volcanoes make the soil fertile, allow the earth to vent pressure, and bring balance to the inner earth.

500

Why are crystals larger in intrusive rock than extrusive rock?

Intrusive rock takes longer to cool than extrusive rock, so the crystals have more time to grow.

500

Describe three different types of pyroclastic substances.

Pumice is a lightweight porous rock. Volcanic ash is made of particles smaller than 4 mm and contains fine rock fragments. Rock fragments bigger than 64 mm are called volcanic blocks. Volcanic bombs are blobs of molten lava that fly out of the volcano. The outside of the bomb cools as it travels through the air but the inside is still warm when it hits the ground.

500

Which of the following do volcanologists not monitor?

A: Temperature of volcano

B: number of volcanic bombs

C: changes in gas

D: size and shape of volcano

 B: number of volcanic bombs
