Tell me 3 writing rules you remember from last semester.

  1. Do not use informal vocabulary (kids, so on or a bit) or abbreviations (etc.) 

  1. Avoid vague or general terms (things, stuff or good). 

  1. Do not state your opinion, personal feelings or be subjective (I think…, I hope…, luckily). 

  1. Avoid using personal pronouns (I, our, you, etc.) or imperatives – directly telling the reader what to do (Stop polluting!, Take this as an example!). 

  1. Do not use contractions (shouldn’t or won't). 

  1. Do not use And, So or But at the beginning of a sentence. 

  1. Avoid using strong or absolute statements (as we all know, obviously, or everybody knows). 

  1. Do not ask rhetorical questions (How can this be solved?). 

  1. Do not use proverbs (every coin has two sides, practice makes perfect) or clichés (double-edged sword, with the development of...). 

  1. Do not write integers between 1-9 (1, 2, 3rd, etc.) in paragraphs or essays.
