When facilitating your orientation sessions, which view should you use? Gallery or speaker?
Gallery, because it's important that you as the facilitator see people
sometimes can't use gallery (ie. sharing screen), so distribute between co-facilitator
Mind dump a couple ways of encouraging interaction/engagement that you've included (or plan to include) in your run sheets
in the chat
examples include connection activities, temperature checks, other check-in questions, etc.
Someone in your zoom room has accidentally unmuted themselves and is having a conversation (that isn't relevant to your zoom) with their IRL friend. What can you do?
Use the chat to answer!
Ask them the mute themselves
Manually mute them and move on
If you're using polls, when should you have them set up?
You can set up polls before or during your zoom
-- discussion of how
tip: use A/B/C/D if you have multiple poll questions
You're using zoom annotate for an activity, and you notice that everyone's names are popping up when they annotate. You'd prefer that it be anonymous. Can you do anything to make that happen? If so, where do you access that menu?
"Hide names of annotators" found in the share screen menu
You're worried that you're speaking too much and people are not participating much. What are some ways you can turn your monologue into a dialogue?
find low-stakes ways and appropriate moments to ask questions instead of answering them (ie. in EDI, asking them to define equity, diversity, and inclusion)
You asked a question and were greeted with absolute silence. You don't hear anyone unmuting, and nothing is popping up in the chat. What now?
resist the urge to fill the silence. sometimes people need a few moments to collect their thoughts and answer you
rephrase the question
remove the pressure, ie. use a zoom feature (poll, chat, reaction), make it anonymous (Mentimeter), etc
remind them of the context behind the question, ie. in the Canvas Q&A, open up the canvas or have them open it and look through it
add pressure (when appropriate), ie. "everyone come up with 1 thing..."
Share whiteboard, everyone write your answers on the board

slide 22
individual tabs/screens, your desktop (shares every tab you switch to), whiteboard, computer audio (ie. playlist), a portion of your screen (shares every tab you switch to), and more
share sound - ie. if you're playing a video, click the button to make sure they can hear the video
what are some zoom features that you can use to encourage participation
Mentimeter -- https://www.menti.com/z69my1v9kc
reactions, chat, polls, breakout rooms, etc
Can you recall a time that you or another facilitator did a really good job at keeping you engaged?
Zoom chat journaling - 1:30 to think and type into the chat, we all send at once.

You're sending your orientees to breakout rooms, but you're worried that that they won't talk in the rooms. What are some things you can do?
Use the chat to respond!
if appropriate, hop through the breakout rooms and facilitate participation in rooms where there is silence
give them incentive to participate before they go to the room (ie. one person shares once they're out of the room)
have a common online document where you can see their participation (ie. jamboard)
