Huygens
As ___________ goes up, __________ goes down.
Wavelength/frequency
This type of wave is often emitted by heaters, and is used in TV remotes.
Infrared Waves
What two properties of light waves impact the color that a light wave will be?
Wavelength and frequency.
What are Mr. Duffy's favorite sports teams (+100 for every one you get, -100 for every one you get wrong)
New York Giants
New York Yankees
New York Rangers
New York Knicks
Why did people believe Newton, that light is a particle?
Newton was more widely known at the time, so people were more inclined to believe him.
1. Increase energy of the light source.
2. Get closer to the light source.
This type of wave is utilized primarily for taking images of the inside of the body (e.g., bones).
X-rays
What does white "light" represent? What does black "light" represent?
White light is all different colors of light, black light is the absence of light.
What college did Mr. Duffy attend? (SPELL IT RIGHT!!)
Fordham University
Who discovered the speed of light in a vacuum? How did this person do this?
Albert "Big Dawg" Einstein, he did this via the equation e=mc2
Which wave property will increase if a light wave has a higher energy/intensity/brightness?
Amplitude
What type of wave has the highest frequency on the electromagnetic spectrum?
Gamma rays
Why do we see certain objects as certain colors?
Certain light waves are reflected back off of the object and those light waves collide with the viewer's eyes.
Where did Mr. Duffy grow up?
Stamford, CT
What is different about light waves compared to other waves?
Light waves do not need a medium - they can travel through a vacuum (no medium)
What is refraction?
Light waves can bend/change speed when they enter a new medium.
What type of wave is most likely to cause skin cancer upon repeated exposure?
U.V.
If an object absorbs all light which is shined at it, what color will be reflected? Why is that?
Black - if all light is absorbed, none is reflected. The absence of light being reflected causes it to have a dark black hue.
In college, Mr. Duffy majored in cell and molecular biology. What did he minor in?
History!
How can we tell for certain that light travels in a straight line?
Light cannot bend around other objects. If light reaches an object, it will not be able to bend around that object and thus that object will cast a shadow.
What is transmission?
When light passes through an object.
Which type of wave has the lowest frequency?
Radio waves
Why does sunlight turn into a rainbow when it is shined through a prism?
The light waves (which are all different colors) separate, so instead of being in one stream, they exist as different individual streams.
What is Mr. Duffy's dog named?
Bobbie!
