Grand Rounds lecture series

Every Monday at 7:00 am in person and via zoom. Coordinate speakers, logistics, finance, attendance stats for Faculty, CRNA's Residents and Fellows, and CME reports and certification.

86 Residents

Annually there are a total of 86 residents.  This includes 22 interns, 22 CA1-PGY2, 22 CA2-PGY3, 22 CA3-PGY4. CA stands for Clinical Year and PGY is Postgraduate year.

Accredited and Non Accredited

The Education Division of the Department of Anesthesiology coordinates, manages and supports 5 ACGME Accredited Fellowships (Regional and Acute Pain, Critical Care, Cardiothoracic, Pain Medicine, and OB) as well as 4 Non ACGME Accredited Fellowships (Neuro, Thoracic, Liver and Global Health).

Medical Student Clerkship

The Anesthesia and Critical Care two week medical student clerkship occurs 12 times per year, and is scheduled, maintained and coordinated by the Education Division.  This includes didactic sessions, OR sessions grade submission and compliance documentation.

Resident Didactic Program

Coordinate yearlong lecture schedules for Intern, CA1, CA2, CA3, "Mixed Teaching" and Case Conference.

Interview season activities

This past interview season, we received 1,136 applications, interviewed 179 applicants over 15 days from October through January. By using a live broadcast and an interactive platform and called "Remo", working with over 28 faculty from WCM, HSS and MSKCC as well as current residents providing information day of interview and "Virtual Night Before Social" we are able to shine above other programs.

CME

The Fellowship branch of the division coordinates Pain Medicine Grand Rounds, Cardiac Anesthesia Conference and the Critical Care Medicine lecture series.  All require CME certification for the program and faculty.

Med Student Elective

The Education Division coordinates and runs month long electives in General Anesthesiology, Cardiac, Pain and Community Practice.  Students from across the country apply for spots to work with our faculty during this elective.  Each year we accommodate @ 60 students.  Each student must be properly vetted, credentialed, clinically assigned daily and graded.

Supplies

Besides maintaining all needed regular supplies for the division, both the residency and fellowship must provide for their trainee's specific supplies that are needed to properly function in their roles. This includes specific books and resources for each stage of training, scrubs, lab coats, thyroid shields, vests, training databases, etc

Education letter

Annual letter provided to faculty which includes resident evaluation narrative feedback, fundamental scores (mentoring, faculty average comparison), strengths and weaknesses

Appointment and Accreditation management

Anesthesiology residents are appointed at three separate institutions annually (WCMC, HSS, MSKCC) and all 86 must have proper documentation at all three.  The ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) is the governing body for all graduate trainees, and monitors standards and requirements, documentation and compliance.  It also conducts site visits to assure all standards are being followed.

Pain Elective

The Pain division not only accommodates national medical students, but also has international rotators as well as in-rotator residents from outside institutions

Advising

All residents are assigned faculty advisers as well as peer advisers that help them navigate throughout the residency.  Specific faculty and resident activities and events as well as required evaluations and progress checks are all created and tallied by the education staff multiple times throughout the year.

Collaboration and Coordination

The division interacts and collaborates with a variety of external partners.  This includes the Graduate Medical Office, SAIL (Skills Aquisition and Innovation Lab), the Standardized Patient program, Cornell Ithaca Veterinary School and Weill Cornell Medical College.

Resident attendance and compliance metrics

All resident lectures, grand rounds attendance, and specific compliance data evaluated and reported.

Resident Scheduling and Rotations

Creating and maintaining resident rotation schedules, coordinating with Qgenda and Med Hub as well as the clinical departments.  Documentation regarding leave requests, conference travel, additional training time needed

Interviews

Each fellowship conducts interviews in a variety of formats as well as a variety of faculty.  Interviews take place from January-April (Reg, CC, Cardiac, OB, Dual CC-Cardiac) and then again June and July (Pain).

Med student specialty advisors

All WCMC students planning on pursuing a career in Anesthesiology are assigned a faculty adviser to assist them through the application process.  Advisers are department faculty who are familiar with the interview process and can provide resources, guidance and assistance.

Events

The division organizes and coordinates a variety of events including Resident Graduation, Chairman's Honor Roll Celebration, Women's Mentoring Circle, Resident Support Committee activities,  and conference participation.

Additional Education related projects

Includes data pulls for Compliance meetings, Education committee meetings, compliance reporting to GME committee. Also includes website development and maintenance for all Canvas websites

Finance

Included under this umbrella is all resident professional allowance submissions, all trainings and certification costs, all conference travel reimbursement, all One Card submissions, all event expenses.

Fellowship lecture series

Each fellowship conducts their own didactic lecture series, journal club and clinical after-hours prep sessions.  All are coordinated through the Fellowship Coordinator and Fellowship PD's

Additional Education Requirements

Additional required trainee activities coordinated by the Education division include Simulation sessions, Point of Care Ultrasound Sessions (POCUS), Standardized Clinical Exam Sessions (OSCE), Inservice Training Exams (ITE).
