what is weather

conditions on earths atmosphere at a certain time and place.

100

Define evaporation

when water changes from a liquid to a gas, this is initiated from heat from the sun.

100

how is a cold front represented on a weather map vs. a warm front.

cold fronts have blue triangles, while warm fronts are red half circles.

100

what tool is used to measure temperature? and what do we call the units we measure in?

thermometer, degrees

100

what does a barometer measure?

air pressure

200

Which layer of earths atmosphere does weather occur?

Troposhere

200

define condensation

water changes from a gas into a liquid, forming water droplets, an accumulation of water droplets form clouds.

200

The place where two air masses meet is called a ...

front

200

define updraft

warm air that moves up instead of sideways.

200

what is a cumulus cloud? draw and explain

fluffy clouds, flat on the bottom, showing fair weather

300

Give 4 examples of severe weather events

hurricanes, tornadoes, snowstorms, twister, tsunami,ect.

300

define the water cycle

The movement of water into the air as water vapor and back to earths surface as precipitation

300

what weather events take place along fronts?

storms, cloud formation and precipitation

300

how does hail form?

hail forms when drops of rain freeze in the clouds and are carried higher into the clouds, freezing over and over, until too heavy then they fall as precipitation.

300

what does cumulonimbus clouds indicate?

tall clouds that bring thunderstorms.

400

what causes weather ?

Weather conditions like: temperature, humidity, wind and air pressure.

400

why is the water cycle important/what does it do?

the water on earth is constantly changing from one form to another, in a continuous cycle, without it we have no water.

400

what is an air mass? Describe the types( 4)

an air mass is a large body of air that has the same amount of temperature, air pressure, and moisture,

1.Warm /2.Cold

3. Moist/Dry

400

how does a warm front form?

when warm air mass pushes into a cold air mass

400

what is the difference between an anemometer and a wind vane ?

Anemometer measures the speed of wind, while a wind vane measures wind's direction.

500

what is the difference between weather and climate?

weather is the conditions of earths atmosphere at a certain time and place. Climate is the usual weather conditions of a place over an extended amount of time.

so one changes frequently, while the other is more consistent based off of geographic location.

500

Explain all the steps of the water cycle in order of occurrence

excess water flows off the surface of earth/mountain as runoff, collects in a body of water (lake, ocean,  stream ect.)heat from the sun causes evaporation to occur, water droplets condense in the clouds until they become too heavy and fall as precipitation. the cycle repeats

500

Most changes in weather happens when...

one air mass moves into a place and pushes out another air mass

500

meteorologists measure ..

the conditions near earths surface and high in the atmosphere

500

Name all the tools a meteorologist might use to predict weather

thermometer, rain gage, barometer, anometer, wind vane, radar, satellite and computers
