When a cold air mass collides with a receding warm air mass, the cold air pushes the warm air up quickly which results in severe weather. When a warm air mass collides with a cold air mass, the warm air rises at a less steep angle over the cold air mass which results in warmer temperatures and a few days of slow rain.
